Christmas Wreath Challenge 2008

Our second Christmas Wreath Challenge was, once again, a resounding success! Businesses were invited to decorate a wreath in a way that best reflected what they do and we (the Xmas Committee) hosted an early morning gathering at The Bakehouse for all participants to acknowledge and celebrate their creative efforts. Five categories were decided upon, gift certificates prepared and judging began. Once again, the level of creativity blew us away. The wreaths were spectacular and innovative. This event makes a terrific community showcase; as people walk through The Village from business to business, they can see our individuality, our uniqueness and our community spirit—all the elements that separate us from the average mall and lend Edgemont Village its cachet.

Best Use of In-House Materials
Pharmasave (Honorable Mention: Runaway Bay & Edgemont Liquor Shoppe)

Best Reflection of a Business
The Edge Bistro (Honorable Mention: Dr. Craig Siemens)

Most Delectable / Edible
The Bakehouse (Honorable Mention: Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory)

Most Creative Effort
Johnstone’s Benefits (Mention: Capilano Library & 32 Books)

Best Use of Purchased Materials
Motion Wear (Honorable Mention: Yaletown Sofa)

We also held a Wreath Challenge for the community. Eight of the entered wreaths were photographed and a photo ad was placed in the North Shore News. The general public was then asked to identify the businesses “described” by the wreaths pictured, requiring them to first ‘walk The Village’, (always our intent), then enter their ballot to win a prize.

Seasonal Events

Harvest Festival This free, village-wide street fair sees the community packed with 5000 attendees who come to enjoy a variety of family-friendly, all-day events. From bands on the main stage, to Irish dancers, a ventriloquist, or The Extreme bike show with Dangerous Dan — there’s something for everyone.

Christmas in The Village Come December, Edgemont Village transforms into a winter wonderland. Each Christmas, we decorate our distinctive, red lamp standards to resemble giant candy canes and light the trees on the street corners and boulevards. Carolers line the streets, Santa makes an annual stop for a day of photos with kids (and pets!) and community contests add to the buzz.

Evenings in Edgemont As surely as summer arrives, so does live music come to Edgemont Village on Friday nights throughout July and August. This joint initiative with the Parks and Recreation Commission has been a resounding success from its first note 9 summers ago. Here, in our extremely beautiful natural setting, we are able to present the sounds of 8 diverse, professional bands for families to enjoy while spending time with their friends and neighbours right in the heart of the village. Attendance at these evenings has grown to average 1200 to 1500 or more; the series finale in August, at which we share the evening with Public Dreams Society and the Wild Lights festival, has attracted attendees of up to 5000.
