Seasonal Events in the Village
Fall
Harvest Festival
This free, village-wide street fair sees the community packed with 5000 attendees who come to enjoy a variety of family-friendly, all-day events. From bands on the main stage, to Irish dancers, a ventriloquist, or The Extreme bike show with Dangerous Dan — there’s something for everyone. Not to mention the season’s first pumpkin pies, burgers, contests and all-day games for kids. It’s our fall celebration, and it’s our way of thanking the community for their support .
Winter
Christmas in The Village
Come December, Edgemont Village transforms into a winter wonderland. Each Christmas, we decorate our distinctive, red lamp standards to resemble giant candy canes and light the trees on the street corners and boulevards. Carolers line the streets, Santa makes an annual stop for a day of photos with kids (and pets!) and community contests add to the buzz.
Christmas Wreath Challenge
At the start of the holiday season, every Village business is invited to decorate a wreath in a way that best reflects the essence of what they do. Wreaths are judged and awarded prizes in five categories. This event makes a terrific community showcase; as people walk through The Village from business to business, they can see our individuality, our uniqueness and our community spirit — all the elements that separate us from the average mall and lend Edgemont Village its cachet.
Santa Paws
Once a year, Santa takes a break from the kids and comes to The Village to pose for photos with excited fans of the canine variety—all shot by a professional pet photographer. We took 96 photos of pooches with our fantastic Santa (AJ Lade). Our professional pet photographer did an amazing job — every pet owner was thrilled! We were able to use donated space thanks to Marlene Tate of Trims, who not only gave us her location for the day, but decorated it too (so you know it looked fabulous)! Thanks to everyone who participated.
Spring
The Great Bunny Caper
For a bit of fun around Easter, we hold a small community contest for our local children: The Great Bunny Caper. Hidden in the windows of 15 different merchant businesses are 15 little plush bunnies. All of them must be located, listed on the Official Bunny Locater Ballot, then dropped off in a ballot box for a chance to win one of three great prizes.
This has been a fun event (as the bunnies are quite clever at hiding) and the children who come hunting are great fun to watch as they scour the storefront windows.
Edgemont Village Serves Up Spring Fashion
Each April for the past nine years we present Edgemont Village Serves Up Spring Fashion. This charity event was initially held in one of our restaurants, where all the Village retailers were invited to display their newest and best on local, real women (plus a couple of handsome fellows thrown in for spice). Loads of prizes were given away and the event has gone on to raise $29,000.00 for SAGE House, a North Shore transition house for women and children.
The success of this event has seen us partner with Capilano Suspension Bridge, which has allowed this always-sold-out event to quadruple in size. The Bridge donates the use of their venue without which the event would not be possible.
Other than venue, the event remains the same. Village retailers blow us away each year with the depth and breadth of product available in our little community. Our local salons style and make up the local women, some of them local employees, familiar faces all. Village merchants annually donate thousands of dollars in prizes for us to raffle off to the luncheon guests, all in aid of a great cause: Women Helping Women.
Summer
Evenings in Edgemont
As surely as summer arrives, so does live music come to Edgemont Village on Friday nights throughout July and August.
This joint initiative with the Parks and Recreation Commission has been a resounding success from its first note 9 summers ago.
Here, in our extremely beautiful natural setting, we are able to present the sounds of 8 diverse, professional bands for families to enjoy while spending time with their friends and neighbours right in the heart of the village.
Monies are raised via sponsorships from members of the Edgemont Village Business & Professional Association, with the evening’s costs shared amongst them.
Attendance at these evenings has grown to average 1200 to 1500 or more; the series finale in August, at which we share the evening with Public Dreams Society and the Wild Lights festival, has attracted attendees of up to 5000.
